History of the 22nd Dynasty and its Pharaohs - The Libyan period Twenty-second Dynasty Dates: 1070–712 B.C.E. Ancient Egyptian History - 22nd Dynasty Fact Sheet Fact 1 on 22nd Dynasty: The previous regional dynasties based at Tanis and Thebes intermarried with the Libyans. The Libyans established the 22nd line of rulers in ancient Egypt often referred to as the Libyan period. Fact 2 on 22nd Dynasty: The chief cities of the Libyans were in Bubastis and Tanis. Sais would also become one of the main cities. The ancestors of these people were the Meshwesh, an ancient Libyan Berber tribe from Tunisia and said to be partly descended from refugees from the city of Troy. Fact 3 on 22nd Dynasty: They adopted the culture and customs of the Egyptians who seemed to initially accept this new dynasty. As time passed the Libyans toned down the devotion to Amun, and the priests at Karnak were undermined. Fact 4 on 22nd Dynasty: The new line of kings began well encouraging trade and increasing the wealth of Egypt. Fact 5 on 22nd Dynasty: The decline started in the reign of their third king, Takelot I. Takelot's authority was not fully recognised in Upper Egypt, and Harsiese a local Theban prince and the High Priest of Amon at Thebes, challenged his power. Fact 6 on 22nd Dynasty: Harsiese encouraged the Thebans to rebel and conflicts between the Libyans and the Thebans continued for many years. Fact 7 on 22nd Dynasty: Other cities and nomes followed the rebellious example of Thebes, attempting to gain independence from the Libyan rulers. Fact 8 on 22nd Dynasty: Harsiese succeeded in gaining independence for Thebes and declared himself king, establishing the 23rd dynasty which was initially running in parallel with the Libyan kings.
