Ancient Egyptian History - 23rd Dynasty Fact Sheet Fact 1 on 23rd Dynasty: Harsiese a prince of Thebes and High Priest of Amun, succeeded in gaining independence for Thebes and declared himself king, establishing the 23rd dynasty which was initially running in parallel with the Libyan kings. Fact 2 on 23rd Dynasty: Pharaoh Pedubast I followed Harsiese with his power base in Leontopolis, the 'City of Lions' which was located in the Nile Delta of Lower Egypt. Fact 3 on 23rd Dynasty: Other kings emerged from Hermopolis, Herakleopolis, Thebes and and Tanis. Fact 4 on 23rd Dynasty: Egypt was in chaos with various cities involved in bitter disputes and conflicts. There was no central government and each of the rulers held small areas of Egypt.
