History of the
8th Dynasty and its Pharaohs, the Rulers of
Memphis
Eighth Dynasty Dates:
Exact Dates Unknown Ancient Egyptian History - 8th Dynasty Fact Sheet Fact 1 on 8th Dynasty: Egypt was unstable, weak and divided. There was a breakdown of central government existing alliances ended, powerful men vied for power and there was conflict between Upper and Lower Egypt. Fact 2 on 8th Dynasty: The government of the previous rulers was run by a small elite segment distinguished by wealth, family or military powers - similar to an Oligarchy. Fact 3 on 8th Dynasty: Many of the previous dynasty's rulers were non-royals. The 8th line of rulers claimed to be the descendants of the sixth dynasty kings. Fact 4 on 8th Dynasty: This change of status might have been an attempt to re-establish the divine status of the kings claiming ancestry from the gods, and the role of mediator with the gods. Fact 5 on 8th Dynasty: This possible attempt to recapture the 'divine' status and the king's 'connection' with the gods would have helped prevent further insurrections as challenging the king would also mean defying the gods. Fact 6 on 8th Dynasty: We know that one of the later kings of this line of kings, King Qakare Ibi, built a pyramid at Saqqara that contains pyramid texts on the walls of his tomb. Another example of emulating the traditions of the previous kings and their connections to the gods in the Afterlife. Fact 7 on 8th Dynasty: King Wadjkare, whose name translates as "Prosperous is the Soul of Ra" was clearly making a connection between himself and the sun-god Ra. King Neferku-Hor and King Neferku-Min were similarly forging a connection between themselves and the gods Hous and Min. Fact 8 on 8th Dynasty: Wadjkare also took action to ensure the backing of the priests by issuing a tax exemption decree providing for special privileges to religious institutions from the king. (The famous Rosetta Stone was a similar royal decree in which tax exemptions for made for priests.) Fact 9 on 8th Dynasty: The collapse of the central government resulted in a decline in foreign trade and the wealth of the country. Fact 10 on 8th Dynasty: The land of Egypt was slowly becoming viewed as a target of foreign invaders. A rock inscription found south of the First Cataract, the ancient Egyptian border with Nubia, records a punitive military expedition against the Nubians that was initiated by one of the last kings of the 8th line. Fact 11 on 8th Dynasty: According to Manetho, an ancient Egyptian historian, this 8th 'royal line' consisted of 27 kings who ruled at Memphis over a period of 146 years.
