History of the
29th Dynasty and its Pharaohs Ancient Egyptian History - 29th Dynasty Fact Sheet Fact 1 on 29th Dynasty: The previous short-lived dynasty of the pharaoh Amyrtaois resulted in rebellion and his removal from office and execution by the founder of the next line of pharaohs, Nephrites I. Fact 2 on 29th Dynasty: Nephrites I won the throne through military force and immediately changed the power base of Egypt from the city of Sais to his home city of Mendes - refer to map below. Fact 3 on 29th Dynasty: Nephrites I adhered to Apis cult involving festivals and rituals that involved the bull-god and the Pharaoh. Religious rituals were conducted in relation to the rejuvenation of the powers of the Pharaoh and the king accompanied the bull-god in the parade and is referred to as the "Race of the Apis bull". Fact 4 on 29th Dynasty: The "Race of the Apis bull" was deemed to be an extremely important occasion and is mentioned in the Palermo Stone. Fact 5 on 29th Dynasty: Nephrites I brought some stability to the government of Egypt and took steps to and regulated trade. Fact 6 on 29th Dynasty: When Nepherites died he should have been followed by his son Muthis. But a powerful faction supported Psammuthes. Psammuthes usurped the throne but he only managed to reign for a year. He was followed by Haker. Fact 7 on 29th Dynasty: King Haker claimed to be the grandson of Nephrites I and therefore the rightful ruler of Egypt. He reigned for thirteen years during which time he initiated various building projects. Fact 8 on 29th Dynasty: King Haker was confronted by the Persian King Artaxerxes II. Haker, allied with Cyprus and Greece, fought a three year war between 385 and 383 BC and kept the Persian threat at bay with the help of Greek mercenaries. Fact 9 on 29th Dynasty: Peace had returned to the country, but there was more political strife, and Haker was deposed by Nepherites II. Fact 10 on 29th Dynasty: Nepherites II was in turn deposed after ruling Egypt for only 4 months. He was believed to have been killed by his successor, Nectanebo I, who founded the next dynasty.
