Fact 1: The Steps was worn as a talisman by both the living and the deceased symbolizing the patronage and protection of Osiris the god of the dead.

Fact 2: Meaning of the Steps: To the ancient Egyptians the Steps symbolized the support on which the ancient god Shu stood when he separated the earth from the sky. They also represent the throne of Osiris and the royal throne of Egypt.

Fact 3: The Steps amulet was usually made of green, blue or white faience glass.

Fact 4: The Steps amulet is reminiscent of the famous Step Pyramid at Saqqara.

Fact 5: The steps amulet was believed to symbolize the protection of Osiris is therefore included in funerary texts of the New Kingdom known as the Book of the Dead that were evolved from the earlier Pyramid Texts and Coffin Texts.

Fact 6: Priests devized a spell to provide the deceased with a supplication for support and patronage of the god Osiris when they began their journey to the 'House of Reeds', the Egyptian paradise, following their successful outcome in their 'trial' in the Hall of Judgement.

Fact 7: Spell 22 in the Book of the Dead relates to the steps in which the deceased prays that he "may have a portion with him who is on the top of the steps." A picture symbol of a ladder in hieroglyphics was included in the papyri of the Book of the Dead.

Fact 8: In the vignettes (pictures) that were included in the Book of the Dead Osisris is depicted seated on his throne, that is shaped like a flight of steps, holding the crook and flail as symbols of his power of dominion in the realm of the dead.

Fact 9: The goddess Isis, the wife of Osiris, is generally depicted with a crown or headdress that resembled steps but represented the royal throne of Egypt. The hieroglyph for Isis also depicts steps as a recognition device for name of the goddess.

Fact 10: A Talisman or an amulet can be described as a religious object consisting of a stone or other small item, often inscribed or carved with magical inscriptions, magic signs, magic symbols, formula or sacred text.
