Fact 1: The Sma was worn as a protective talisman by both the living and the deceased. The amulet was believed to give the deceased the power to breathe.

Fact 2: Meaning: To the ancient Egyptians this amulet symbolized union and stability of affection

Fact 3: The Sma amulet or talisman was worn to strengthen love and friendship and ensure physical happiness and faithfulness.

Fact 4: This was also a funerary amulet that was buried in the folds of the linen swathings of mummies, or inserted into the body.

Fact 5: The Sma, or Sam, was frequently made of dark basalt or another type of stone such as hematite or black obsidian.

Fact 6: The Sma hieroglyph was used to express the concept of union in relation to the "Two Lands" of "Upper and Lower Egypt. The Sma hieroglyph was an Ideogram for "unite" and "join".

Fact 7: The Sma also represented the Egyptian word for  "lung" and the Sma symbol was therefore placed on the chest of a mummy to give it breath in the underworld.

Fact 8: Hapy was one of the Sons of Horus who was depicted as a mummified man with the head of a baboon and protected the lungs that were contained in a Canopic jar.

Fact 9: A Talisman or an amulet can be described as a religious object consisting of a stone or other small item, often inscribed or carved with magical inscriptions, magic signs, magic symbols, formula or sacred text.
