Facts about the Ancient Egyptian Sma Talisman Ancient Egypt - The Sma Amulet Fact Sheet Fact 1: The Sma was worn as a protective talisman by both the living and the deceased. The amulet was believed to give the deceased the power to breathe. Fact 2: Meaning: To the ancient Egyptians this amulet symbolized union and stability of affection Fact 3: The Sma amulet or talisman was worn to strengthen love and friendship and ensure physical happiness and faithfulness. Fact 7: The Sma also represented the Egyptian word for "lung" and the Sma symbol was therefore placed on the chest of a mummy to give it breath in the underworld.
