King Salitis Ancient Egyptian King - Salitis Fact Sheet Fact 1 on Salitis: History: The Hyksos were a variety of tribes who came from Syria, Canaan and the east in Arabia. They had been exiled from their own lands by the powerful Hittites. Their original intention, dating back to the 11th dynasty, was probably to trade but the instability of Egypt allowed them to mount a massive invasion of 250,000 Hyksos. Fact 2 on Salitis: The Egyptians offered little resistance to the Hyksos and Salitis grabbed the opportunity to seize the Egyptian throne. Fact 3 on Salitis: Salitis emerged as the greatest and most powerful leader of the Hyksos Fact 4 on Salitis: Name: The name 'Salitis' is an Arabic translation of the word Sultan, meaning "powerful king". He was also referred to by the names of Sharek or Sharlek. Fact 5 on Salitis: The Hyksos engaged in a totally alien form of warfare to that used by the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians used weapons such as maces, axes, bows and arrows, knives and spears. The Hyksos had the horse and chariot. The sight and sounds of hordes of Hyksos on chariots must have been absolutely terrifying to the Egyptians. It is no wonder that they showed little resistance to the "Shepherd Kings". Fact 6 on Salitis: Salitis savagely forced submission from the Egyptians by sacking great cities, including Memphis. Beautiful temples to the gods were demolished and cities were set on fire. Fact 7 on Salitis: Salitis showed no mercy to the Egyptians and the Hyksos conducted themselves in a barbarous fashion killing all those that offered resistance and reducing their wives and children to slavery. Fact 8 on Salitis: Salitis controlled all of the lands in the Nile Delta and Northern Egypt (Lower Egypt). Fact 9 on Salitis: The far south of Egypt escaped the destructive Hyksos however the rulers in the Elephantine, Thebes and Abydos acknowledged the power of the conquerors of the Nile Delta and, by the payment of an annual tribute, retained their independence from the 'foreign rulers'. Fact 10 on Salitis: Salitis started to forge alliances with the Kerman Rulers of Kush (Nubia) and trade in ebony, ivory and gold flourished. These ships were far more stabile and seaworthy than the feluccas, the boats used by the Egyptians. The new ships enabled easier access to the islands of the Mediterranean Fact 12 on Salitis: Trade with the Mediterranean and Nubia increased significantly and boosted the economy and wealth of Egypt. Fact 13 on Salitis: Another significant improvement was made to the prosperity of Egypt by the introduction of the shaduf which revolutionized the farming techniques used in Egypt that resulted in their ability to raise two crops a year. Fact 14 on Salitis: Salatis solidified his position as king by strategically placing garrisons in suitable locations, fortifying the eastern borders that he believed were under threat of invasion by the powerful Assyrians. Fact 15 on Salitis: He made Avaris his capital (see map below), with extensive building and fortifications which helped him enforce his rule. Fact 16 on Salitis: Salitas founded a dynasty of six Hyksos kings and was followed in succession by Beon, Apachnas, Apophis, Jannas and Asses. According to Manetho these six "Foreign Rulers" reigned 198 years and 10 months.
