His name relates to the god Menthu who is described as being the sun deity of warfare. His Horus name was Tepi'o. His throne name was Neb-hetep-re, meaning "Pleased is the Lord Ra". Fact 2 on Mentuhotep I: History: The rulers of the previous line of pharaohs were based in Herakleopolis. These kings were unable to subdue the people of Upper Egypt and allowed an assault on Upper Egypt by their violent allies in the province of Asyut (see map below). Fact 3 on Mentuhotep I: The Asyut allies of the Herakleopolitan kings vandalized sacred tombs and corpses in Upper Egypt. These acts of terrible sacrilege sparked conflict between the rulers in Herakleopolis in Lower Egypt and Thebes in Upper Egypt Fact 4 on Mentuhotep I: The acts of sacrilege by the Asyut had to be avenged and Mentuhotep emerged as the leader of the Thebans. Fact 5 on Mentuhotep I: Mentuhotep was the heir of the Theban Nomarchy who ruled Thebes and initiated the fight against the Herakleopolitan kings and their allies to become the founder of the 11th dynasty. Fact 6 on Mentuhotep I: The name association with the god Menthu is highly relevant to the king known as Mentuhotep I. The title of the god was "Menthu, Lord of Thebes" and the cult centre of Menthu was based at Thebes. His attributes as the god warfare and courage were therefore connected with Mentuhotep. Fact 7 on Mentuhotep I: His queen consort was Queen Neferu who is believed to be the mother of his heir, Intef. Fact 8 on Mentuhotep I: Documents from the era refer to him as the slayer of Nubians, Asiatics, and Libyans, so he clearly had a considerable reputation as a successful military commander.
