Location of Pyramids
Learn about the ancient pyramids of Egypt, the tombs of the pharaohs, and where the major pyramids are located. The design of the pyramids evolved over many years. The original tombs of the pharaohs were single storey structures called mastabas. The mastaba evolved into the step pyramid style which was in turn replaced by the smooth sided pyramids. The most famous of all the pyramids are the great structures which are located at Giza. The location of pyramids changed as the funeral complexes filled up. The location of pyramids in Ancient Egypt were Giza, Abusir, Saqqara, Lisht, Meidum, Dashur and Abu Rowash.

Location of Pyramids: Giza | The Giza plateau is located about 25km (15 miles) south west of Cairo on the west bank of the River Nile. It is the location of the great pyramid of Khufu (aka Cheops), Khafre (aka Chephren) and Menkaure (aka Mycerinus).
| Location of Pyramids: Abusir | The location of the Abusir necropolis is 35 km (21 miles) south of Cairo. The Pyramid of Sahure is the largest pyramid and dominates the site. The following picture shows the pyramid of Abusir and sight of the great monuments of Giza in the distance. 
| Location of Pyramids: Saqqara | Saqqara is located west of Memphis on the edge of the Libyan Desert. The area of the necropolis extends from Abu Rowash down to Meidum. Saqqara is the location of the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the Pyramid of Merykare, the Pyramid of Userkaf, the Pyramid of Teti and the Pyramid of Unas.
| Location of Pyramids: Lisht | Lisht is located south of Cairo was the site of royal and elite burials during the Middle Kingdom. Two major monuments are known to have been built at Lisht – those of Amenemhat I and his son, Senusret I of the 12th dynasty.

| Location of Pyramids: Dashur | Dashur is a royal necropolis located in the desert approximately 40 kilometres (25 miles) south of Cairo. Dashur is the location of the Bent Pyramid, the Red Pyramid and the Black Pyramid.
| Location of Pyramids: Meidum | Meidum is located about 100 km south of modern Cairo, and is the location of the Meidum pyramid, first true pyramid, near Crocodilopolis in the Faiyum.
| Location of Pyramids: Abu Rowash | Abu Rowash is located 8 km to the North of Giza and is the site of the lost pyramid also known as the mostly ruined Pyramid of Djedefre.
