Philae Temple Entranceway A row of columns, carved to represent the papayus tree/plant, runs along each side of the entranceway to the ancient Egyptian Philae Temple. Ancient Egyptians used the Cyperus Papyrus plant for making papyrus paper, boats, food, fire wood, mats, foot wear and food utensils. The papyrus plant represented a very important part of Ancient Egyptian life. The Pavilion is so named because it was rebuilt by the Roman Emperor Trajan circa 100, in a somewhat Greek style, it features carved reliefs of Trajan offering gifts to the Egyptian Gods.
