Colossi of Memnon
This statue, representing Amenhotep III, stands 20 metres high
and was cut out of sandstone by hand.
This Colossi is one of two which once marked the entrance to the funerary temple
of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III.
When Amenhotep III died his place was taken by his son who ruled the
Egyptian empire as Amenhotep IV until he changed his name to
