Colossi of Memnon
(Amenhotep III & Mutemuya)

This Colossi of Amenhotep III has a smaller statue of his mother, Mutemuya, ajacent to his right leg. This Colossi is one of two which  once marked the entrance to the funerary temple of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III.

Pharaoh Amenhotep III ruled the Egyptian empire approximately 3400 years ago, his reign marked the zenith of Egyptian power, wealth and influence. In recognition of this fact Amenhotep III is also referred to as Amenhotep the Magnificent by many Egyptologists.

This statue, representing Amenhotep III, stands 20 metres high and was cut out of sandstone by hand. This Colossi is one of two which  once marked the entrance to the funerary temple of the Pharaoh Amenhotep III.

When Amenhotep III died his place was taken by his son who ruled the Egyptian empire as Amenhotep IV until he changed his name to Akhenaten.
