Timeline & History of Hieroglyphics: The Translators and Egyptologists

History Hieroglyphics:

1799

Numerous attempts were made by various historians to decipher the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs but all failed. Hieroglyphic writing was deemed to be a series of pictures that were mysterious, enigmatic and unreadable.

1799 was the year when the break through in translating hieroglyphs was finally made. The troops of Napoleon Bonaparte were in Egypt and they discovered an important engraving with would become known as the Rosetta Stone.

The Rosetta Stone was discovered at Rosetta (Rashid) in the Nile Delta of Egypt and was an engraving that had a royal decree written in three different languages.

The name of the officer who found the Rosetta Stone was Pierre Francois-Xavier Bouchards, a French officer of engineers.

The languages on the Rosetta Stone were Greek,  Demotic and hieroglyphs.

After the British defeated the French, the Rosetta Stone was handed to the British Army, but the French had made copies of the engravings.

No one could read hieroglyphs at the time of the discovery of the Rosetta Stone.

Silvestre de Sacy understood a few phonetic characters of the demotic script which he compared with the Greek script, and identified some hieroglyphs as proper names: "Alexandros", "Alexandreia", "Ptolemaios", "Arsinoe" and Ptolemy's title "Epiphanes".
